Gute kreative Leistungen ergeben sich oft, wenn man nicht genau darüber nachdenkt, wenn sie also einfach so passieren. Im Fall von Way To Heaven bin ich eines Morgens aufgewacht und hab das führende Thema der Gitarre noch im Halbschlaf vor mich hingesummt. Daraufhin hab ich mich dann gleich zur Gitarre gesetzt, um die Töne zu fixieren und nicht wieder zu vergessen. Refrain und Strophe waren dann schnell gefunden, alles hat sich fast von allein zusammengesetzt. Später haben wir dann, um das Lied abzuschließen, den Chor in der Mitte noch eingeführt. Er war also keine Idee der ersten Stunde, fügt sich aber nahtlos ein. Im Text gehts darum, eine Orientierung zu finden. Er bezieht sich sowohl auf kleine Alltagssituationen als auch auf generelle Lebenseinstellungen und wird durch den Gegensatz Heaven-Hell ins Extreme geführt.
Die Dauer von über acht Minuten war übrigens nicht von vornherein beabsichtigt. Als Way To Heaven fertig war, hätten wir es auf ca. fünf Minuten geschätzt. Bei genauerer Betrachtung hat sich dann aber gezeigt, dass einfach jeder einzelne Abschnitt verhältnismäßig lang dauert, wodurch insgesamt diese acht Minuten herauskommen.
